Winter is the perfect season to mix up your workouts, working up a sweat on the slopes instead of at the gym. Skiing and snowboarding burn hundreds of calories an hour plus you’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even realize how hard you’re working. In addition to a nice calorie burn from skiing and snowboarding, you’ll tone and build muscle, increase flexibility while connecting with the great outdoors.

If you’ve never skied before, no matter your age, it’s not too late to learn! January is the perfect month to take on the sport with Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month. During the month of January various ski mountains and resorts across the country offer special deals with lessons from professional instructors.

To find lessons in your area, visit SkiandSnowboardMonth.org and search by region to find participating mountains. To name a few killer deals, Ski Areas of New York is hosting a state-wide learn to ski program for beginners, only $35 for a lift ticket, lesson and rentals. Vermont resorts are offering similar deals at $29 for beginners. The special deals are happening all across the US, so whether you’re in Colorado or California, this is the winter that you can finally hit the slopes!

For beginners, it’s ideal to start out with a lesson to learn proper form and safety. If possible, find a week or weekend where you’ll have a few consecutive days to hit the mountain. When starting out, the first day can be rough, but soon you’ll start to feel more comfortable, giving you the chance to enjoy your time on the slopes. For this reason it’s best to stay at a resort to give yourself a few chances to get acquainted with the sport. Ski getaways are a perfect mix of outdoor activities, exercise and quality time spent with friends. There’s nothing better than hitting the lodge for hot chocolate to unwind after a long day on the slopes with your ski buddies.

If it’s your first time skiing or snowboarding, your best bet is to rent equipment and see how you like it. There are key pieces you’ll need to invest in (or borrow from friends) before getting out there. To name a few: warm and waterproof snow pants and jacket, long sleeves and leggings for layering, gloves or mittens, ski socks, goggles, a hat and a helmet (which you can also rent). The slopes are the prefect place to show some personality, so skip the black pants and black jacket and opt for fun bright colors and patterns. Not only will you look awesome, it will help your friends and family to more easily spot you on the mountain.
